Highlights of our life Together in 2005

Churches Together has been active on many fronts in 2005. A brief snapshot follows:

‘The Women’s Day of Prayer’ set the tone for us as the Women of Poland arranged this International Service to encourage us all to ‘Let our Light Shine’ and taught us much about Salt and Bread in their country. It is really a call to mobilisation of Christians world-wide and we are seeking to do this here.

We were present at the Rotary Exhibition in Old Amersham celebrating ‘100 Years of Amersham’ where historical details of the Churches were shown alongside present aims for Christian witness today.

‘The Walk of Witness on Good Friday’ was well-supported and this prayerful walk around the Town let us to reflect afresh on our duty to pray for all who live and work in the area as we seek to serve them. It was a good witness and a timely reminder to all who saw it as to what day ‘Good Friday’ really is.

The Election Forum’ (organised by COTHA and Dr. Challoners’) was a tremendous success and great to hear all the candidates’ views. They all spoke well and questions were raised on matters important to us all.

‘Christian Aid Week’ was very successful and began with a beautiful Youth Service at St. Mary’s. It was good to share with all the generations present as we seek to ‘Make Poverty History’ (and we even had delicious chocolate too).
‘A Hymn for all Seasons’ flower festival at St. Mary’s in June was fantastic as can be seen from the ‘photos. A wonderful floral display of living faith which raised so much money for Ian Rennie Hospice at Home and the British Red Cross.

Good Friday

"When I survey the wondrous cross"

When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.

Easter

"Christ the Lord is risen again"

Christ the Lord is risen again,
Christ has broken every chain,
Hark, angelic voices cry,
singing evermore on high,
Alleluia!

VE/VJ Commemoration Parade/Carnival on Saturday, 9th July. The Churches Together pitch of 3 gazebos was an amazing Team event. It was humming with children doing woodturning with Tom from Amersham Vineyard, lots of tea and chat with people mingling together across our community whilst the ‘Girls Only’ Team did beautiful manicures, bespoke pencil cases, tattoos and made things with the children. The booklet ‘Word for Today’ was given away and many spoke of the difference their faith made to their lives in our world two days after the London bombing as we reflected with thanksgiving on our freedom so dearly won for us.

Amersham Churches’ Holiday Club held in August was great fun for all the children who came and for all those who helped. We’re looking forward to August 2006.

Macmillan Coffee Morning on the last Friday in September is held in Celia Palmer’s home each year and is a means of helping those who are grieving and others who are fighting cancer.

‘Mass Lobby for Trade Justice’ at Westminster on 2nd November: we joined with Churches from Chesham and discussed the issues with our MP Cheryl Gillan in the Boothroyd Room in Portcullis House.

Some of us at The Lobby opposite the Houses of Parliament.

Amersham Christmas Festival: this year we distributed 600 leaflets about the Christmas services, the ‘Churches Together Choir’ sang carols around the Christmas Tree. We served tea/coffee/biscuits in St. Michael’s where the crib was in place along with other displays. The Mayor held her reception in the Church too so the Church was at the heart of this community event.
Amersham First Action Group: Churches Together is now a member of this group seeking to revitalise the Amersham community and is able to contribute ideas from within the Churches and offer support to various ventures.

Behind the events we shared, stand the ‘Noble Army of Hidden Workers’ doing so much behind the scenes in our community. They bring our Living Saviour Jesus to all who need him in today’s hurting world by helping the Churches do things Together both here in the community and in the wider world.

The organisations involved are: Workaid, the Sycamore Club, The Wheeler Coffee Pot, the Sunday Service at the Croft, Christian Aid and Fairtrade, the International Student Week-end, The Women’s Day of Prayer and the Amersham Churches’ Holiday Club.

Celia Palmer, Chair, comments: How good it is to be Together as Christians, and that our diversity is a strength, which we can offer to our community ‘in the way to Christ that suits them best’.
