Men in need of debt management advice
New research shows that the recession has hit men disproportionately worse than women, with a rising number seeking debt management advice.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) reports a 51 percent increase in the number of men seeking debt advice since 2007, as a combination of rising unemployment, a slower rate of salary increases and rising household expenditure all take their toll on men's financial status.
Figures released by the Government's Insolvency Service recently revealed that 35,682 people entered into personal insolvency in the first three months of 2010, a 17.9% increase on the same quarter of 2009.
The CCCS findings, published in the charity's quarterly Debt Dashboard, found that despite falling debt levels and earning more than women, men are less able to repay their debts while an increasing proportion lack the means to meet basic living costs.
Almost half (48.05 percent) of the men seeking debt management advice attribute the cause of their debt to reduced income, including redundancy or unemployment.
A study by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks revealed that two million families say that they feel under severe strain on a daily basis due to money worries.
An effective debt management plan can help you control your debt and improve your financial situation. As debt management can be complicated – especially if you have substantial debts - it is always advisable to seek professional help to determine what the best solution to your money problems could be.
